⚡

Take a second and think about it.

Your phone. Your tablet. Your laptop. Power tools. Kids’ toys. Wireless headphones. Battery packs. E-bikes and scooters.

Lithium-ion batteries have become part of everyday life, which is exactly why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is:

🔥 “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Lithium-ion batteries store a tremendous amount of energy in a small package. When used properly, they’re generally safe. But when a battery is damaged, improperly charged, overheated, or paired with the wrong charger, that energy can become a serious fire hazard.

A few simple habits can make a difference:

🔌 Use the charging equipment that came with the device or equipment approved by its manufacturer.

🛏️ Don’t charge phones, tablets, or laptops on beds, couches, pillows, or other soft surfaces that can trap heat.

⚠️ Stop using a battery if you notice unusual heat, swelling, leaking, an unusual odor, popping sounds, or a change in shape.

🚪 Keep charging devices away from exits and escape routes.

Charging something is something most of us do every single day.

Make doing it safely part of the routine.
