Just before 11:00 p

m. last night, Clay County Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a possible residential structure fire on Cold Branch Road in the Elf School Fire District (Station 2).

Engine 2, Tender 2, Tender 1, and Tender 6 responded to the scene. Upon arrival, crews found no smoke or flames visible from the exterior of the residence.

Two firefighters entered the home to investigate while the Incident Commander spoke with the homeowner outside. The homeowner reported hearing a popping sound and noticing smoke with an unusual odor coming from the oven. The oven had not been used since breakfast the previous morning.

During their investigation, the interior crew discovered obvious charring on the oven’s power cord and around the point where the cord entered the appliance. After removing the access panels, firefighters determined that a small animal had crawled inside the stove and was electrocuted after coming into contact with energized electrical components.

As a precaution, the stove was removed from the residence and power to the range receptacle was disconnected until the homeowner can have the wiring inspected by a licensed electrician.

Fortunately, no fire extension occurred and there was no significant damage to the home.

This incident serves as a reminder that unusual odors, smoke, popping sounds, or signs of overheating from any appliance should be investigated immediately. If it is safe to do so, disconnect power to the appliance and contact a qualified electrician. If you believe there is an active fire or other emergency, call 911 immediately.
